The Interdunal Lagoon System of the City of Veracruz is made up of approximately 18 coastal wetlands and freshwater bodies that, together, play a fundamental role in the environmental balance of the region. These lagoons sustain various ecosystem processes that give them significant ecological, social and economic value.

In addition to being a refuge for a wide diversity of local flora and fauna, the interdunal lagoons serve as resting sites for migratory birds and contribute to biodiversity conservation. They also act as natural regulators of the hydrological cycle, favoring the capture, charge and recharge of aquifers. Their presence helps protect urban areas from flooding, since they operate as natural buffer zones.

Covering an area of 65,516 hectares, the PNSAV is made up of at least 28 reefs, some of which feature reef lagoons with seagrass beds, beaches, shoals, islands or cays.

Coral reefs are the main ecosystem and conservation focus of this National Park as they contribute to the mitigation of coastal impacts caused by storms, hurricanes and winds such as the "nortes". Likewise, reefs keep the coastline relatively stable, produce oxygen and capture carbon dioxide (CO2).
