ADOLFO RUIZ CORTINEZ ECOLOGICAL PARK
The park is a space for direct contact with the ecological environment. It has a children's entertainment area with games and a splash pool, a multi-purpose room for events and a baseball field.
In the green areas, you can take walks or hike, and there is also a bridge that represents the 4 times Veracruz was attacked and defended, called the Bridge of 4 Arches.
History of the ecological park
In 1833, on this same land, the second cemetery of the city was built, known as "El Canelo". This cemetery operated until 1913 and still holds the remains of former governor Manuel Gutiérrez Zamora, as well as numerous Veracruzanos who remain buried there to this day.
Years later, in 1923, the decision was made to transform this space into the Veracruzano Sports Park. Finally, in 1937, it opened its doors to the public, becoming an important meeting point for sports in the city. The legendary Rojos del Águila de Veracruz and the Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz played in this venue. Even today, the softball field that remains inside the park preserves a tribute dedicated to athletes of this discipline.
In 1940, after the death of one of the directors of the Mexican Baseball League, Jorge Pasquel Casanueva, the park was temporarily named Parque Deportivo Veracruzano Jorge Pasquel Casanueva. However, this name had little permanence because a large part of the population did not agree with the designation.
It was not until 1991 that the place was transformed into the current Adolfo Ruiz Cortines Ecological Park, a stage in which it received an important remodeling. From then on, various areas were designated for recreation and family rest, keeping only a space adapted for the practice of children's and youth baseball, as well as softball and rugby.
In 2018, it was decided to relocate the park's feline population to a more suitable space, where they could receive food and veterinary care. This measure was taken due to the considerable increase in abandoned cats, as many people, observing the presence of numerous felines in the park, considered the place as a site to leave their pets.
